How the RSA Driving Test Waiting List and Booking Invitations Work in 2026

Applying for an RSA driving test, joining the waiting list, receiving an invitation and booking an appointment are separate steps. In simple terms, you apply through MyRoadSafety, join the waiting list if no suitable appointment is available, wait for the RSA email invitation, then log in and select an appointment.

This matters because applying does not mean that a test date has been booked. Equally, an invitation is not itself a confirmed appointment. You still need to choose and confirm a slot in MyRoadSafety within the invitation period.

The process is run by the Road Safety Authority, not by Irish Driving Test Finder. Our service is independent and cannot control RSA test availability, invitation timing or the appointments shown in MyRoadSafety.

The four stages: application, waiting list, invitation and booking

1. Applying for a driving test

Your application is the starting point. The RSA says you can apply online through MyRoadSafety. After logging in or registering, choose the vehicle category you want to be tested in, set your licence goal and go to the driving test step.

For an online application, the RSA says you will need your learner permit driver number, your PPSN and a valid Visa or Mastercard to pay the test fee. The RSA also provides a postal application route, but it does not schedule driving tests by phone or email.

Before applying, make sure you are working towards the right category. A car, motorcycle, bus and truck test can have different eligibility requirements and not every centre offers every vehicle category.

2. Joining the waiting list

When you choose a test centre in MyRoadSafety, there may be no appointment that suits or no appointment available. In that case, the RSA says you can choose to join the waiting list for that centre.

Being on the waiting list means your application is in the RSA process for an invitation. It does not mean you have a test date, a reserved place at a particular time or immediate access to all future slots.

Choose your centre carefully. The RSA lists 41 driving test centre locations nationally, but availability by vehicle category varies. Check that the centre can offer a test in your category before relying on it.

3. Receiving a booking invitation

The RSA emails a booking invitation when it reaches your application in the queue and test slots become available. This is the point at which you are invited to book. Keep an eye on the email address connected to your MyRoadSafety account, including any junk or spam folder.

The RSA’s current guidance says an invitation gives you 10 days to select an appointment. If you are not ready to sit the test, you can hold off booking and add yourself to the invitation queue again later.

For car tests, the RSA provides an online waiting-time estimator. It can give an idea of when an eligible person already on the waiting list may receive an invitation. It does not show an estimate for non-car categories, applications made less than two weeks ago, people who are not eligible or people who already have a current booking invitation.

4. Selecting and confirming your test appointment

After receiving the invitation, log in to MyRoadSafety and select an available appointment. Your test is booked only after you choose and confirm a slot.

It is sensible to check the centre, date, time and vehicle category before confirming. Read the RSA terms and conditions before booking, especially if your availability is limited or you may need to change the appointment later.

Check eligibility before relying on an invitation

It is possible to apply and wait while you are still completing requirements, but you must be eligible when it is time to sit the test. The RSA advises learner drivers to use its eligibility checker for their vehicle category.

For a first car or motorcycle learner permit, the RSA says you generally must have held the permit for at least six months. For a car test, all required Essential Driver Training sessions must be completed and recorded in the MyEDT portal. For a motorcycle test, Initial Basic Training must be completed for the correct motorcycle category and the certificate must be in date.

There are exceptions in some circumstances, including certain foreign-licence situations and historic learner permits. Check the RSA’s current eligibility guidance rather than assuming an exception applies to you.

Important: if you have a test scheduled but have not completed the required training, the RSA says it will cancel the appointment five days before the test date. You will not lose the fee and will remain on the waiting list, with another invitation emailed after the training requirement is met.

Practical preparation while waiting can save problems later:

• Check that your learner permit is current and covers the test category.
• Confirm your EDT status in MyEDT for a car test, or your IBT position for a motorcycle test.
• Review the RSA requirements for your vehicle category and chosen centre.
• Make sure your MyRoadSafety contact details and email access are up to date.
• Consider in advance which dates and times you could genuinely attend.

What happens if you already have a booked test?

The waiting-list process is mainly about getting an invitation to make an initial booking. Once you have a confirmed test date, any change is managed through the My bookings area of MyRoadSafety.

According to the RSA’s current terms, you can reschedule twice without losing your fee if your test date is more than 10 days away. On the third reschedule, or if you reschedule within 10 days of the appointment, you lose the fee and must pay for a new test. Rescheduling is not possible within two days of the appointment.

If you look for another slot and none is suitable, the RSA says you can cancel the booking. When new slots become available, it will email another invitation and you can book another test without losing your place in the queue. Always check the live terms before taking action, as rules can change.

Cancellation and withdrawal are different. Cancelling relates to an appointment you have already booked. Withdrawing your application means leaving the waiting list because you no longer wish to take the test. The RSA explains both options in MyRoadSafety.

Using Irish Driving Test Finder after you have a booking

If you already hold a MyRoadSafety appointment and would prefer an earlier or otherwise more suitable date, Irish Driving Test Finder is an independent paid monitoring service. 1. Register for, or log in to, MyRoadSafety.
2. Check your learner permit, mandatory training and six-month rule position.
3. Apply for the correct test category and pay the RSA fee.
4. Select a test centre that offers your vehicle category.
5. If no suitable appointment is offered, join the RSA waiting list.
6. Watch for the RSA booking invitation email and act within its 10-day window.
7. Choose and confirm an appointment in MyRoadSafety.
8. If you have a booking and want to watch for a different suitable slot, set clear centre, date and time preferences with Irish Driving Test Finder.
9. Before test day, recheck the RSA’s current requirements for documents, insurance and the vehicle.

One final point for 2026: the RSA terms state that from 9 March 2026, candidates must present a valid motor insurance certificate for the vehicle brought to test. It must be a physical original or copy of the original, as digital copies are not accepted. Where the candidate is not named on the certificate, the RSA says additional insurer confirmation is required. Check the current RSA terms before your test in case requirements change.
