Yes. You can change an RSA driving test appointment through your MyRoadSafety account if your test date is more than 10 days away. The RSA says you may reschedule twice without losing your fee, provided you choose an available alternative slot. The practical point is to check your existing booking carefully before making a change, as the rules become stricter close to the test date.

Know the difference: applying, invitation, booking and rescheduling

These stages are easy to mix up, but they affect what you can do next.

• Applying means submitting your driving test application to the RSA, normally through MyRoadSafety, and paying the relevant fee.
• Joining the waiting list happens when there is no suitable appointment slot at your chosen centre after you apply.
• Receiving an invitation means the RSA has emailed you to say you can choose an appointment. The RSA states that an invitation lasts for 10 days.
• Booking means selecting and confirming a specific test appointment in MyRoadSafety after receiving an invitation.
• Rescheduling means changing an appointment that is already booked to another available test slot.

This guide is mainly for drivers at the final stage: you already have a confirmed MyRoadSafety appointment and want to alter it. You do not need to submit a new driving test application simply because you would prefer another date.

When you can reschedule without losing your fee

The RSA’s current terms say that, once your test date is more than 10 days away, you can reschedule your test twice without losing your fee. You must select an alternative appointment offered through MyRoadSafety and confirm the change.

There are important limits:

• If you reschedule for a third time, the RSA says you lose the fee and must pay for a new test.
• If you reschedule within 10 days of your appointment, you lose the fee and must pay for a new test.
• It is not possible to reschedule within two days of the appointment.

Count carefully before you press confirm. If your appointment is near, changing it may have a financial consequence even where a new slot looks more convenient. RSA terms and procedures can change, so check the current wording in MyRoadSafety and on the RSA website before acting.

Rescheduling is not the same as cancelling

Rescheduling is the right route when an acceptable replacement appointment is visible. If no suitable alternative slot is available, the RSA advises you to cancel the booking instead. It says you will then receive another invitation when new test slots become available, can book again free of charge and will not lose your place in the queue.

Cancellation has its own policy and consequences, particularly close to your test date. Read the RSA cancellation information in your account before choosing it. Do not assume that cancelling will immediately produce a better date, centre or time.

How to change your driving test date in MyRoadSafety

The RSA sets out the rescheduling process in its driving test terms and conditions. Follow these steps when your appointment is more than 10 days away.

1. Log in to your MyRoadSafety account.
2. Open the My bookings page.
3. Select Manage Booking for the driving test you want to change.
4. Choose Reschedule booking and continue.
5. Review the alternative test slots shown.
6. Select a suitable slot, if one is available, and confirm the new booking.

Before you confirm, check every detail: test date, start time, centre, vehicle category and your ability to attend. It is sensible to ensure your instructor, car and any necessary time off are workable for the replacement date before giving up your existing appointment.

If there is no suitable alternative shown, do not choose a date you cannot attend just to secure a change. Consider whether keeping the existing appointment is the safer choice, or whether cancellation and a later invitation better suits your circumstances.

Looking for an earlier date or another test centre

An earlier appointment may become available when a test slot is released, but availability is decided by the RSA and can change. There is no fixed pattern that drivers can rely on. A cancellation alert service can help you watch for potentially suitable openings, but it does not create appointments and cannot promise an earlier test.

When you set your preferences, be realistic about what you could genuinely accept. Consider:

• Centres: include only locations you can reach comfortably and that offer your vehicle category. The RSA lists test centres and the categories they cover.
• Dates: allow enough time to finish required training, practise and arrange a suitable vehicle.
• Times: include the times at which you can get to the centre early and are likely to have access to your instructor or vehicle.
• Travel: a different centre may mean unfamiliar routes and extra journey time. Plan a practice drive in the area where possible.

For car tests, the RSA says there are 41 test centre locations around the country, although availability and vehicle categories vary. Motorcycle, truck and bus tests are available at only selected centres. Always check the RSA centre information rather than assuming that every centre can provide every test type.

Using a notification or managed AutoBook service

If you already hold a MyRoadSafety test appointment, you can use Irish Driving Test Finder’s Notify or AutoBook options according to the level of help you want. With Notify, you receive an email when a potentially suitable appointment appears and decide whether to proceed. With managed AutoBook, you authorise rescheduling of your existing MyRoadSafety appointment within the centres, date range and times you select.

Set only preferences you are happy to accept. A broader choice of centres, dates or times may identify more potentially suitable options, while narrow preferences may identify fewer. That is a practical trade-off, not a promise about availability. Review your customer dashboard and keep your preferences up to date if your plans change.

Whichever route you choose, the official booking remains governed by the RSA and MyRoadSafety rules. Keep an eye on your booking details and email address, and make sure you understand whether a reschedule would be your first, second or third change.

Check that you are ready before moving the appointment

A sooner date is useful only if you can sit the test and arrive properly prepared. The RSA requires you to hold a current, valid learner permit for the test category. For a first car or motorcycle learner permit, you must normally have held it for at least six months. Car candidates must complete Essential Driver Training, while motorcycle candidates must complete Initial Basic Training.

If you have a scheduled test but have not completed the required training, the RSA says it will cancel the appointment five days before the test date. You will not lose the fee and remain on the waiting list, with another booking invitation sent after you meet the requirement. Check your training record before accepting an earlier appointment.

Also allow time to prepare your documents and vehicle. The RSA says late arrivals cannot take the test and lose the fee. Its terms also state that, from 9 March 2026, candidates must present a valid physical original certificate of motor insurance, or a physical copy of the original, for the vehicle used in the test. Digital copies are not accepted under that stated requirement.

A calm decision checklist

Before changing your date, ask yourself these questions:

1. Is my present test more than 10 days away?
2. How many times have I already rescheduled this booking?
3. Can I attend the proposed date, time and centre without rushing?
4. Have I completed the training and eligibility requirements for my vehicle category?
5. Can I arrange a roadworthy, properly insured vehicle that meets the RSA requirements?
6. If I cancel, am I comfortable waiting for another RSA invitation rather than keeping my current date?

If the answers are clear, rescheduling can be a straightforward way to move towards an appointment that suits you better.
